## Description

The Old Rite church of the Protection of the Mother of God in Cahul was built by the town's Lipovans between 1882 and 1892 and consecrated on 19 October 1892. The building is of red brick, 32 metres long and 13 wide, with coloured stained glass and ironclad doors, in an eclectic style. It keeps a collection of icons painted on wood from the 18th and 19th centuries and a library of 19th-century church books. In the Soviet period it served as a military depot, the bell tower collapsed and the murals were lost. After restoration, regular Old Rite services are held here again.
