Monasteries and churches · Chișinău and Surroundings
Căpriana Monastery lies in the village of Căpriana, Strășeni district, about 40 km north-west of Chișinău, in a landscape of wooded hills. It is one of the oldest monasteries in Moldova, first documented in 1429, and it was the residence of the Metropolitans of Moldavia. The complex has three churches: the Dormition of the Mother of God, St George and St Nicholas. It housed the largest monastic library in historical Moldova, with princely gifts. The Soviet authorities closed the monastery in 1962 and it reopened in 1989. Visits are possible every day from 6:00 to 20:00, with free entry. A tourist complex with a restaurant and an eco shop stands nearby.
