The museum occupies the former Water Tower of Chișinău, built in an eclectic style to a design by the architect Alexandru Bernardazzi, on Alexei Mateevici Street. The tower supplied water to the city centre, later served as a fire watchtower, and has housed the city museum since 1971. The exhibition 'The History of the City' shows objects from the 15th to the 20th century. The top level hosts painting and photography exhibitions and sometimes concerts. The tower has a lift, added in the 2013 renovation, alongside the original metal spiral staircase.
