The National Art Museum of Moldova stands in the centre of Chișinău on 31 August 1989 Street, in a building that once housed a girls' gymnasium. The collection began in 1939 and now holds tens of thousands of works; the permanent exhibitions cover national art and universal art, and the museum also runs temporary exhibitions and interactive activities. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays. Entry is free on the last Wednesday of each month. Guided tours are offered in Romanian or other languages for small groups.
