The Eugène Ionesco National Theatre in Chișinău was founded on 11 September 1991 by a team of actors who had just graduated from the Shchukin School in Moscow, in the Vakhtangov tradition. Eugène Ionesco agreed that the new theatre would carry his name. Petru Vutcărău has been artistic director since the start. The theatre works in a building on Grigore Vieru boulevard, formerly the Moscova recreation centre, granted to it by government decision in 2007. The company has toured Europe and Asia and took part in the Avignon festival in 1994. The programme and tickets are on the theatre's site.
