Monasteries and churches · The Codru Forests
Hâncu Monastery, dedicated to Saint Parascheva, stands in the forest near the source of the Cogâlnic River, in Bursuc village, Nisporeni district. It was founded in 1678 by Mihalcea Hâncu; the legend says his daughter Elena refused an arranged marriage and took refuge in a cave, and her father built a church. In 1816 the skete became a monastery. The complex has a summer church of Saint Parascheva, a winter church of the Dormition and a cathedral with three altars on two levels.
