Monasteries and churches · Northern Moldova
The Monastery of the Ascension stands in Japca village, Florești district, on the bank of the Dniester. It grew out of a rock hermitage founded between the 15th and 16th centuries, and in 1818 Metropolitan Gavriil Bănulescu-Bodoni raised the skete to a monastery. The summer church was rebuilt between 1912 and 1916 in an eclectic style with three altars, a rarity among the region's monasteries. Japca is the only monastery in Moldova that stayed open throughout the Soviet era, thanks to Abbess Serafima's appeals in Moscow.
