Monasteries and churches
Noul Neamț Monastery is in Chițcani village near Tiraspol, in an area under the control of the Transnistrian separatist authorities since 1992. It was founded in 1861 by monks from Neamț Monastery led by Teofan Cristea, as a protest against the confiscation of monastic property in the United Principalities, and consecrated in 1864. The complex has churches, a bell tower and grounds with sculptures, and the monastery appears on a Moldovan stamp of 1997. The Soviet authorities closed it in 1962 and used the buildings as hospitals; the church reopened in 1989 and again in 1991.
