Monasteries and churches · The Codru Forests
Varzaresti Monastery, in Varzaresti commune, Nisporeni district, is regarded as the first monastery in Moldova: a charter of 25 April 1420, from the time of Alexander the Good, already mentions it. Tradition says it was founded by the boyar Stan Vărzari. After rebuilding in 1770, nuns from Cosauti came in 1815 and it became a convent. The communist authorities closed it in 1959 and reconstruction began in 1990. It keeps the icon of the Mother of God of Varzaresti, brought in 1840, and the Prodromita icon, painted on Mount Athos. Its patron saint is Saint Demetrius. Visiting hours are daily from 8:00 to 20:00.
