Nature · Northern Moldova
Duruitoarea Veche is a gorge in northern Moldova, in the Râșcani district, cut by the Duruitoarea stream, a tributary of the Ciugur, between steep limestone slopes and oddly shaped rocks. Above the village, 33 metres up, is a cave of three chambers with a total length of 49 metres, used as a shelter by prehistoric people. Archaeologists found bone and stone tools, mammoth ivory pendants and part of a human jaw here. Close by, the bones of a female mammoth were found, with a tusk of almost three metres. Visitors climb to the cave and walk through the gorge, where a small waterfall can also be seen.
A rough sketch. The distance is in a straight line, not by road.
