Monasteries and churches · The Codru Forests
Frumoasa Monastery, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, is in Frumoasa village, Călărași district, in the Codri hills. It was founded in the early 19th century by the landowner Efrem Iurcu with three monks from Neamț Monastery, and is first documented in 1807. From 1946 to 1994 the Soviet authorities used the buildings as an orphanage, a school for the deaf and an institution for young offenders. It reopened in September 1994. Earlier visitors included the writer Mihail Sadoveanu and Bishop Visarion Puiu.
