Monasteries and churches · The Codru Forests
Hârbovăț Monastery stands near Hîrbovăț village, Călărași district, in the Codri hills. Sources date its founding to 1730, by the boyar Constantin Carpuz, though some historians place it in the 17th century; it was burned three times by Turks and Tatars before 1812. The winter church, dedicated to the Dormition and painted inside in Byzantine style, was built in 1816, and the summer church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, in 1870. The monastery keeps the miracle-working icon of the Mother of God known as Gîrbovița, donated in 1790, and relics from Optina and the Kyiv Caves Lavra. Under Soviet rule it was closed and used as a school for disabled children, then as a livestock farm; it has been a monastery again since 1992.
