Monasteries and churches · The Codru Forests
Răciula Monastery is in Răciula village, Călărași district, right inside the village, with its courtyard holding the churches and the nuns' houses. It was founded in 1797 by the brothers Andrei and Ioan Roșca on the estate of the freeholder Lupu Stratan; it began as a monks' monastery and became a community of nuns in 1811. Its main dedication is the Birth of the Mother of God. The complex has two main churches, one built in 1800 and renovated in 1845, the other built in 1822 and restored in 1880, plus a winter and a summer church added in the 19th and 20th centuries.
