Monasteries and churches · The Codru Forests
Hîrjauca Monastery, dedicated to the Ascension of the Lord, is in Hîrjauca village, Călărași district, in the Codri hills. It was founded in 1740, when an elder named Theodosios built a house of prayer, soon joined by two monks from Neamț Monastery. In the 19th century it ran the only monastic school in Bessarabia, and by 1890 its library held over 400 books in Slavonic and Romanian. The large stone church was built between 1820 and 1836, and Archimandrite Spiridon Filipovici laid out a park regarded as the finest garden in Bessarabia until 1940. The monastery was closed in 1953 and became a sanatorium; it reopened in 1993.
